retail therapy

At 4am this morning Caleb was in the bathroom throwing up yet again - just when we through he was nearly over this gastro bug that has managed to grab hold of all three boys over the past two weeks, it is back with vengeance. None of them have been sick with it at the same time. BUT while Nathan had it, Caleb needed stitches in his lip after a lunch time football incident at school. While Isaac suffered the last few days and Caleb came down with it, Nathan broke out in hives - we think it was the washing powder sample packs I used when I ran out of my regular detergent last weekend. There have been numerous missed days of school and kindy and I have basically been housebound - drowning in a sea of washing, scrubbing bathrooms, providing sympathy and support and trying to keep myself and the little Miss healthy.

We were to have a night out tonight - child free - but there was no way I could leave one of the kids when they were unwell.

To save my sanity, this afternoon I grabbed a few minutes and headed to my LQS The Patchwork Apple. If I couldn't get out of the house tonight, I decided to treat myself to a little retail therapy of the fabric kind, and spend some time working on my scrappy checkerboard quilt. I got the white I needed, the fabric I want to bind it with, and a few other small pieces (lets just pretend they are scraps LOL) that I loved.

I have cut, paired and pressed 80 pairs ready to piece together - only trouble is I cant seem to find any light coloured thread - I know I have a big spool here somewhere, hopefully I can locate it! I layed them out roughly on the floor tonight, and i think I will probably need about another 40 pairs to complete the top.

That means, if I go through with the plan of only featuring each fabric once, getting hold of another 40 different pretty girly fabrics! Otherwise I have enough of a few favourites that I could double up on if needs be.

Goats Milk & Honey Soap

I thought I would update the progress of my soap making adventure.
My first batch has cured enough to start using.
The milk carton moulds worked well as I could just tear them away and put them in the recycling.

The batch of soap made 13 bars that were between 80g -110g each - obviously need to work on cutting a bit more evenly LOL - doesn't matter though it just adds to the rustic handmade charm!
It has quite a few little air bubbles where I had to swap to using the hand mixer to get it to trace as the stab mixer was overheating, and it is still a little softer than I would like, but it will continue hardening until it gets used.

It has a lovely creamy lather and my skin feels great when I'm using it.
While I was away I was using a commercially produced 'natural' soap (a cheapy from the local market) and continued using this when I got home as I kept forgetting to bring another bar of my soap in from box in the shed. My skin quickly became dry and itchy. I swapped back to my home made bars and it was like slathering myself in moisturiser. Ive never been one use many cleansers etc, I'm lucky if I remember to pop a bit of moisturiser on every now and then! The skin on my face is definitely thanking me for its daily dose of moisturising goodness.
This morning I even used it to wash my hair. My favourite shampoo (Panteen) has changed recently. I'm not keen on the new scent, and it seems to be making my scalp dry and itchy as well. I figured if the rest of my skin liked my soap then maybe my scalp might too. If nothing else the olive oil, coconut oil, glycerin, honey and goats milk would give my hair a nice mini treatment.
( I'm not totally crazy - there are lots of people who make similar soap and use it for soap, shampoo, even a version for washing dishes and clothes.)
What was the worst that could happen - my hair could look limp and yuck and I would have to wash it again tomorrow! Well I'm pleased to report that it worked surprisingly well. When I first washed it it felt a little too clean - I'm very used to that lovely smooth coating of chemicals after I condition my hair! As I dried it, it became beautifully soft and silky and not at all limp or greasy looking as I was concerned it might
I will definately be using it again - probably as a treatment every few weeks...not sure if I'm psychologically ready to go completely to using just soap and water - there are a lot of years of commercialism, that have drummed into my mind the need for all these specialty products, to come to terms with yet!

Her big girls room

The change table and cot are gone, replaced by the 'big girls' bed, bedside table and a book shelf. Not a lot of changes, but suprising how much difference it makes to the room. The before (nursery) shots are here.

I love the way her room (and Isaacs room) catches the winter sun for much of the day.

A new place to play, up on the bed - and underneath as well.

For the first day she needed her little stool to help her climb up. Now she has mastered it, and climbs up with ease.

All I have to do is work out how to keep it this tidy!!!

chaos

Ive been a little lax with updating my blog lately. Please excuse the lack of posts, and the fact that I will bombard you all with 20 days worth of my daily photos in the next couple of days. A week away, a week of one child then another with gastro, a house in total disarray as built in robes were installed in Isaac's room, requiring all his worldly possesions removed from the room and then sorted and repacked neatly behind closed doors, new (to them) beds for Nathan, Isaac and (drum roll..............) Jacinta - yes you read right, my little baby girl moved into a big girls bed today.

It was with very mixed emotions that I took down the cot and put together the bed. I packed away all the precious cot linen, all the while wistfully remembering the many nights that I had put one of my little ones to bed in a cot. Those days will now be behind us forever - all my children are growing up. There are no babies in our house any more.

I packed the cot and the stroller up to be returned to my friend. I made up the bed, covered the new mattress we got today with the new mattress protector, sheets, quilt, covers and pillows we got for her at the spotlight sale a few weeks ago. It looks so big in her room, but she looks surprisingly at home and comfortable. When the boys moved into their beds I remember thinking how tiny and lost they looked. Maybe a week away with her sleeping (really well) in a big bed has me used to the idea. Anyway, she loves it.
Oh and I think that girls linen is much cuter than boys - even though we only set the bed up today, she already has three quilt covers - the cute spotty flannelet one, a lovely flowery one (the pillowcase from that one is the other one on the bed) and another gorgeous pink suede like one with flowers and butterflies that we got for an absolute bargain price at the mattress shop today (ex display stock!) I will post some pics of each of them and the rest of the room tomorrow.
